The presence of a child, is not the absence of the mother

I’m amazed at how much the new mommies of the world get forgotten about in the presence of a baby. New baby’s always bring a sense of excitement and an overwhelming feeling of love, its hard to stay away because the newness of a child and the innocence is so beautiful. As a new mom myself one thing I find that I couldn’t imagine would be the case is how often I get forgotten about. How often questions of concern are directed to my daughter and not me and while I am happy to have my daughter stand in the spotlight, I can’t help but wonder, why do the mothers get forgotten in the midst.

We are not invisible, we did not disappear and a lot of women need the genuine check-in. With about 7.5% of women experiencing postpartum depression, why are we not taking care of the mothers just as much as we care for the children that they bore. Those first 72 hours for a new mother are incredibly trying, our bodies are going through incredible changes, we’re thrust into a whole new shell that is our bodies, our hormones are raging, our body is working overtime to produce food for our children, we’re exhausted, excited, emotional, unsure. We’re so many things and truthfully the difference between a good day and a rough, could be someone checking in on our health and wellbeing.

The presence of my daughter does not equate the absence of me. To the not-yet-mommy’s, family members and friends, please care for the mother as much as you do the child. Don’t forget the moms, I can tell you now that 99.9% of the time the baby will have what they need and all that they want. As for the mother, we’ll never know how much she is sacrificing, what she is going through so please ask the mom, what does SHE need! Ask her how SHE is adjusting, Inquire about HER well-being.

We’re the unsung hero’s In this journey so please the next time you call and want to check in on the baby, please also check in on the mother, she may need far more than you realize
